Spider veins are damaged, visible blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface that are red, blue or purple and have a “web-like” appearance.
What is it?
Spider veins often appear in clusters, resembling web-like formations or branches. While they can develop anywhere on the body, they are more commonly found on the legs, feet or face. These veins are not harmful, but they can lead to swelling and a sensation of heaviness in the affected areas. Spider veins are typically more prevalent in women than in men and can be inherited. They're also prevalent in those who sit or stand for extended periods, pregnant women and overweight individuals due to poor circulation.
Spider veins arise when the valves within your veins become weak. Factors such as sunlight, hormonal fluctuations, previous vein surgeries, overexposure to ultraviolet rays, or injuries can also contribute to their formation.
On occasion, spider veins may indicate a more severe condition known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). The board-certified dermatologists at Clarkston Dermatology can determine if you are at risk of developing CVI. For patients unhappy with the appearance of their spider veins, we also provide aesthetic treatments at our offices in Clarkston and Oxford, Michigan.
