Conditions resulting from a fungus (yeast or mold) affecting the skin. These infections occur when the immune system is weakened or you are in an environment where fungi thrive.
What is it?
Common fungal infections include athlete's foot, ringworm and yeast infections. They occur when a fungus enters your body and grows in a specific area, overwhelming your immune system's defenses. Most fungal infections impact the skin and nails, but some can also affect areas like the mouth, throat, lungs, urinary tract, and more. Since fungi do well in environments with moisture buildup or significant friction, these can be prime environments for infection.
Fungal infections can affect people of all ages and skin types. People are more susceptible if they have weakened immune systems, poor circulation or underlying conditions like diabetes. Symptoms can include rashes, redness, swelling, bumps, skin cracking or peeling or itching.
Each fungal infection can look a little different and many have a telltale presentation – like the circular rash with darkened outline casued by ringworm. (For the record, there is no worm involved in ringworm, just a pesky fungus.)
How is it treated?
Since there are many types of fungal infections, see a dermatologist to make sure you get the appropriate treatment. There are also some medical conditions (like the potentially serious Lyme disease) that can masquerade as a fungal rash to the untrained eye. If you have a suspicious abnormality on your skin, our board-certified providers in Clarkston and Oxford, Michigan can ensure you get the best care.
Treatment options combat further growth of the fungus that caused your infection. Typical treatments include antifungal medication and topical creams. Patients who have a fungal infection often find minimal relief until the appropriate antifungal medication is used. After a diagnosis, we can get you the right medicine, providing fast and effective results.
