What is it?

Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease (STD) spread through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. The warts are caused by specific varieties of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They typically manifest as tiny, flesh-colored lumps or groupings in the genital region – although their presence might not be instantly discernible. Genital warts are prevalent and impact both genders. While genital warts can cause discomfort or anxiety due to their positioning and visibility, they are generally benign and do not progress to cancer. They can, nonetheless, provoke discomfort or pain, and in certain situations, can result in complications during gestation.

How is it treated?

Our dermatologists in Clarkston and Oxford, Michigan can deliver effective treatment for genital warts, alleviating symptoms and aiding the removal of visible warts. Treatments include topical therapies, cryotherapy (freezing) or, in some instances, minor surgical interventions. While there is no cure for the HPV virus itself, these treatments can control the exterior symptoms and hinder further transmission.

In addition to providing treatment, Clarkston Dermatology can suggest prevention strategies, such as the HPV vaccination, and provide guidance on how to minimize the risk of transmitting the condition to partners. If you believe you are experiencing genital warts, our dermatologists can confirm a diagnosis and advise you on the best plan of care.
