Common warts, flat warts and plantar warts are caused by different strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and appear on the hands, face, feet or genitals.
What is it?
Warts are benign, coarse protrusions that form on the skin when the HPV virus penetrates the body through a wound or a break in the skin. These elevated, flesh-toned growths can appear anywhere on the body and often resemble a blister. They're innocuous, but many of our patients at our dermatology clinic choose to have them removed due to their contagious nature and simply because they don't want these unsightly warts lingering on their skin!
Typical warts are often located on hands, fingers, around the nails, or at the back of the hands. Plantar warts develop on the soles of the feet and can cause discomfort if left untreated. Flat warts can emerge anywhere on the body while filiform warts, which resemble threads, can appear on the face.
