What is it?
Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) is a safe and proven type of radiation primarily used for diagnosed skin cancer. SRT kills cancer cells using low levels of X-ray energy. Unlike some radiation used to treat other cancers, the X-ray beam only penetrates the skin's surface, which avoids deep tissue damage and minimizes scarring.
When appropriate, our board-certified dermatologists choose SRT to treat patients because it:
What to expect
Prior to your treatment, your Clarkston Dermatology provider will walk you through your treatment plan. We will take measurements and photographs and mark the area(s) receiving the low-energy X-rays. Depending on the treatment area, we may place a lead shield to protect the nearby areas of the skin from radiation. Then, we’ll put you into position on a radiotherapy “couch” or table and will bring the X-ray to the impacted area(s). We’ll exit the room for a few minutes while you receive treatment, but we can see and hear you the entire time. You won’t feel anything during your treatment.
Once we’ve captured the needed scans, we’ll come back and speak with you about the next steps and treatments, and then you may head home. Depending on the condition and severity, treatments vary from one visit to every day for up to six weeks.
