KYBELLA®

What is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is part of a growing category of prescription dermatological treatments known as “injectables.” It is an FDA-approved treatment that destroys the fat cells underneath your chin to provide you with a more streamlined profile. The formula itself is identical to deoxycholic acid, a substance your body makes naturally. This acid helps to absorb fat in the areas KYBELLA® injections are administered. Because KYBELLA® can be injected precisely where it is needed with a needle, there is no need to go through the pain, risk, and extensive recovery time of traditional plastic surgery or liposuction.

The number of injections you receive at each visit will vary depending on the amount of fat under your chin and your desired results. Dr. McFalda will discuss your unique treatment plan with you during your free consultation. Each visit, or session, is to be given 4-6 weeks apart, with no more than 6 total treatments recommended. Many patients see recognizable, or even desired, results in 2-4 sessions.

Swelling, bruising, redness, areas of hardness, mild pain, and under-chin numbness are normal side-effects of KYBELLA® treatment, and will subside in days or weeks depending on how quickly you typically heal. While you may want to relax the remainder of the day after receiving KYBELLA® injections, you should be able to return to your normal, everyday schedule the next day without issue. Many of our patients opt to cover their temporary bruising and swelling with a loosely-wrapped scarf until they resolve, and use over-the-counter pain medicine to deal with any lingering discomfort.

If you experience side-effects including facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or development of an uneven smile, you should contact a healthcare professional immediately. These are rare but potentially serious side-effects that may require medical attention. It should be noted that in clinical trials these side effects were temporary, with nerve injury in the jaw resolving on its own in a median of 44 days, and trouble swallowing resolving on its own in a median of 3 days.

Many of our patients ask us how to get rid of a double chin, and for the majority of them, KYBELLA® is among the best options we recommend. However, there are some people for whom KYBELLA® is not a recommended treatment, including:

  • Anyone who has an infection in the treatment area
  • Patients under 18 years of age
  • Women who are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if KYBELLA® will harm your unborn baby or if it passes into your breast milk)

As with any dermatological procedure, you should also let your doctor know of any medical conditions you have in the neck area, if you have trouble swallowing, which medications you are taking, and if you have bleeding issues. A history of past or planned surgeries on your face, neck and chin areas will also help ensure we can make the best, safest, healthiest and most effective treatment recommendations.

The before and after KYBELLA® results we have seen are truly incredible. We are very excited about this highly-effective injectable that has solved the age-old question of how to get rid of a double chin safely, quickly, and remarkably! We’re confident you’ll be excited by KYBELLA®, too. Request an appointment today to meet with Dr. McFalda and learn more about this breakthrough treatment.
